FAQ: The Must-Have Pocket Tool / Wootz EDC
For the most up-to-date information about the status of our project, check our project updates on Kickstarter!

What's this problem with locking blades?

This is only applicable to our UK/EU backers. We wouldn’t call it a problem but our best solution to meet their strict laws and regulations. For us, it is an opportunity to cater their needs and wants. Now the good news! We already designed and have a working prototype for Universal UK/EU model (two hands operable and non-locking blade). NB! This doesn’t affect our initial product design or campaign.

What is Kickstarter and how do I pledge?

Kickstarter is not a traditional store; instead, it’s a platform to support creatives as they bring projects to life. In our case, when you back our campaign, you’ll be supporting the creation of Wootz EDC and getting the chance to pre-order the very first that comes into the world.

Here’s how you pledge:

  1. Choose your reward here: http://bit.ly/Wootz-EDC

  2. When our campaign ends (on April 28th), Kickstarter will charge your credit card. Until then, feel free to change or cancel your pledge in your profile.

  3. When we get close to shipping, we will send you a BackerKit survey to collect your shipping information.

You’ll be the very first to receive Wootz EDC and you’ll lock in Kickstarter-only discounted pricing for your early support. Plus, you’ll have our undying gratitude and we’ll have your back forever.

Would it be possible to change my "single" reward to the 3 pack?

To change your (reward) pledge amount, visit the project page and click the “Manage your pledge” button that appears next to your pledge amount and then select “Change your pledge” on the following page.  * Just a reminder that it’s only possible to select one reward tier at a time.

Is the Wootz EDC "locking" or "folding" pocket tool?

Technically, the Wootz EDC Pocket Tool is both locking* and folding. Safety was one of the main concerns when it comes to a tool of this size. We wanted the design to be suitable for all EDC lovers. The lock is a “liner lock” rather than a push button or any other type of lock.

*To All UK & EU Backers - GOOD NEWS! Please be advised that we already have a working prototype for a “non-locking” model, it is specially designed for our UK/EU backers (it is not mandatory you can still choose the locking model if you would like to). After the campaign, we will send out a BackerKit survey and you can choose blade type, coating and scale material. (UPDATE #6)

You've raised much more that your funding goal - will your production schedule be affected?

No, it will not, we are very optimistic about our estimated delivery of July 2018.

However, we certainly understand this concern - and it is something we are proactively addressing. We have been communicating the success of our campaign to our manufacturing partners in order to get an early start on production planning.

If pledges reach a certain point we will be opening up new reward levels with expected delivery set later - to September 2018. Any backers who get in before that changeover are still on track for July 2018 delivery.

What are stretch goals?

The idea of a stretch goal is that a project has a minimum funding amount before it can be viable at all - a minimum order quantity required for EDC pocket tools, or the cost to pay for molding and tooling, for instance. But if that funding level is exceeded, sometimes that means economies of scale can kick in.

Many project creators use those economies of scale to create additional goals that will happen at specific “overfunding” levels. Say, at €5,000 we can meet minimum order quantity for EDC pocket tools, but at €25,000 the production costs drop enough that we can now afford different blade design (tanto) or add a UK friendly carry model. The stretch goals are a great way to maintain momentum and excitement for people who have already backed a project.

However, the more stretch goals a project has, the more likely it is that a project’s delivery will be delayed, because they may require additional work and production that wasn’t taken into account when the project’s original delivery date was set.

Can I get a mix of blades for my multi-pack reward?

That’s right, you can mix and match! After this campaign, we will send out a BackerKit survey and you can choose blade, coating and scales material together with “locking” or “non-locking” model.

Can the Wootz EDC be shipped into my country? Is it legal?

To the best of our knowledge, there shouldn’t be an issue with the Wootz EDC. It is a small pocket tool with bottle opener and a money clip or “pocket multi-tool”. The AU and the UK have some very strict policies for carrying sharp objects or even importing them into the country. We would recommend doing some extra research just in case. (UK law prohibits any locking knife, regardless of blade size)

The entire length of the Wootz EDC Pocket Tool is only 5.5” (14 cm) long and also considered a folding pocket multi-tool. Additionally, the blade is only 2.3” which is equivalent to 5.8 centimetres (small).

Although we do not foresee any complications with customs, it is at the discretion of the agent. We will mark it as “pocket tool” for a smooth delivery.

In most cases, it is in a very grey situation if the blade is under 3”. Safety is one of our main priorities for a blade of this size we decided to engineer it with a thumb stud (manual opening) and not a button. We’re not totally sure if this can justify as being legal in public, however. Our backers should use discretion when carrying the Wootz EDC Pocket Tool out into public, regardless of size. Ultimately this can be a pretty handy multi-tool when camping, hiking, fishing, and the list goes on and on. :)

*To All UK & EU Backers - GOOD NEWS! Please be advised that we already have a working prototype for a “non-locking” model, it is specially designed for our UK/EU backers (it is not mandatory you can still choose the locking model if you would like to). How do you open it one hand when you are left-handed?

We haven’t forgotten the left-handed people. Studies suggest that approximately 10% of the world population is left-handed. Our current model is designed for right-handed users, however, it is possible to use your index finger to open the tool (but it can be a little bit awkward). Hopefully, our current Kickstarter campaign will be a success and we can expand our product range to cater for left-handed users. Thank you for the suggestion and please stay tuned.

I need to change my address as a backer. How do I do that?

That’s no problem at this stage. After the campaign, we will send out a BackerKit survey where you can choose your Wootz EDC preferences and enter your full delivery address with contact details. We don’t use Kickstarter default information.

Anything you can do to review the shipping cost for non EU/USA backers?

That’s a good question and we want to offer best prices possible to get this project off the ground. Before our campaign launched, we talked with other creators and many projects underestimated their actual cost of fulfilling the rewards. This caused delays and problems along the way. Unfortunately, we don’t have control or bargaining power when it comes to shipment fees. Example: sending a trackable parcel to Singapore is costing us €12.- plus time and packaging materials. Sorry for any inconveniences caused. We would suggest to get some friends together and pledge 3 or 7 instead. This will absorb the shipping cost per unit? Will be possible to send locking version to Europe?

After this campaign we will send out a survey and you can choose coating and scales material together with EU/UK friendly model or not. We will send them out exactly how you tell us on the BackerKit survey. Not all European counties are the same.

I don't see my question here?

No problem :) please send us a direct message through Kickstarter (preferred method), or shoot us an email: [email protected]

BackerKit FAQ

What is BackerKit?

BackerKit is a service that crowdfunded project creators use to keep track of hundreds to tens of thousands of backers—from shipping details, pledge levels, preferences and quantities, whether they have paid or had their card declined, special notes, and everything in between!

The BackerKit software and support team is independent from the campaign’s project team—BackerKit does not handle the actual reward shipping. For more information about the preparation or delivery status of your rewards, please check the project's updates page.

How does BackerKit work?

After the campaign ends, the project creator will send you an email with a unique link to your survey. You can check out a walkthrough of the process here.

I never received my invitation. How do I complete the survey?

The most common reasons for not receiving a survey email is that you may be checking an email inbox different from the email address you used to sign up with Kickstarter, Indiegogo or Tilt Pro account, or it may be caught in your spam filter.

Confirm that the email address you are searching matches the email address tied to your Kickstarter, Indiegogo, or Tilt Pro account. If that doesn’t work, then try checking your spam, junk or promotions folders. You can also search for "backerkit” in your inbox.

To resend the survey to yourself, visit the project page and input the email address associated with your Kickstarter, Indiegogo or Tilt Pro account.

How do I update my shipping address?

BackerKit allows you to update your shipping address until the shipping addresses are locked by the project creator. To update your address, go back to your BackerKit survey by inputting your email here.

When will my order be shipped, charged or locked?

That is handled directly by the project creator. BackerKit functions independently of the project itself, so we do not have control of their physical shipping timeline. If you want to check on the project’s status, we recommend reading over the project's updates page.

I completed the survey, but haven't received my rewards yet. When will they arrive?

As BackerKit does not actually handle any rewards or shipping, the best way to stay updated on the shipping timeline would be to check out the project's updates page.
